VA Survivors and Burial Benefits Kit

After the passing of a loved one who has served this country, many survivors do not know what to do or where to begin to obtain VA assistance.
The VA has prepared a kit to help guide families after the loss of a loved one. Families and survivors should keep this kit in storage with service medical records, discharge documents, ect.

Patriot Pen Essay

Nationwide, the Patriots Pen VFW-sponsored youth essay competition gives students an opportunity to write essays expressing their views on an annual patriotic theme. We invite you to join the more than 120,000 students who participated last year in this contest. The national winners will receive at least $500. The first-place national award is currently $5,000 plus an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for the winner and a parent or guardian.

Voice of Democracy Audio-Essay Contest

Each year, nearly 38,000 high school students from across the country enter to win a share of the $2.2 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the VFW’s Voice of Democracy audio-essay competition. Other national scholarships range from $1,000-$16,000, and the first-place winner from each (state) VFW Department wins a minimum scholarship of $1,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.

Teacher of the Year

Each year the VFW recognizes three exceptional teachers – one each from the elementary, junior high, and high school levels – for their outstanding commitment to teach Americanism and instill patriotism in their students.

Buddy Poppy

The red poppy has connected generations of veterans, service members, and their families with civilians in remembering all those who have fallen. And for more than 75 years, the VFW’s “Buddy”® Poppy program has honored those who have sacrificed by raising millions of dollars to support veterans’ well-being
